WELCOME TO NAS MERIDIAN: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

By Tracy Fuga

Welcome to NAS Meridian

Welcome to Naval Air Station (NAS) Meridian is one of the Navy’s two jet strike pilot training facilities training Sailors and Marines. NAS Meridian is about 8,000 acres of land, and 4,000 additional acres occupied by Outlying Field (OFL) Joe Williams Field. Naval Air Station Meridian boasts an economic impact of more than $430 million annually for MS. The base is roughly 15 to 20 miles northeast of Meridian, Mississippi, and employs nearly 3,000 active-duty personnel. Service members calling the Meridian, MS, military base home undergo aviation and technical training, as well as other activities by providing timely, quality services and facilities in a safe, secure community. If you’re new to the area or returning, our guide can help you get the most out of your PCS and make your NAS Meridian MS stay feel like home. Continue reading for an in-depth guide to help aid you in your transition to living and working on NAS Meridian. Where Is Naval Air Station Meridian?

What Is the History of NAS Meridian?

On July 16, 1957, construction began on the Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) and it was officially opened on July 19, 1961, with Capt. W.F. Krantz received the golden key, and Senator John C. Stennis spoke at the ceremony to mark the occasion.

The operations area was named McCain Field after the late Admiral John S. McCain, Sr., a Mississippi native.

During the early 1960s, the base would undergo organizational structure changes and by July 1968, the installation became a full Naval Air Station.

In 1971, Training Air Wing ONE (TRAWING ONE) and Training Squadron NINETEEN (VT-19) were established and President Richard Nixon dedicated the new Naval Technical Training Center in 1973.

Notably, the Gulf Coast is no stranger to hurricanes, which have played a major role in the history of NAS Meridian.

In September 1965, hundreds of planes from Florida bases arrived at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station to escape Hurricane Betsy and again in 1968 and 1969, 300 aircraft from NAS Pensacola sought refuge from Hurricanes Gladys and Camille, respectively.

These events helped facilitate the acceleration of development for NAS Meridian housing and local infrastructure, helping the base grow over the years.

NAS Meridian became a Major Shore Command in 1982 and was part of the Department of Defense Model Installation Program in 1984. In 1985, the galley was dedicated to Marine Lance Corporal Roy M. Wheat, a Medal of Honor recipient.

Today, NAS Meridian supports aviation and technical training with the Air Operations Department operating NAS Meridian/McCain Field and Joe Williams Outlying Landing Field, providing flight training and support.

The Ground Electronics Maintenance Division (GEMD) maintains radio communications, navigation aids, and weather equipment. Joe Williams OLF, located 25 miles from the main station, helps reduce traffic congestion.

Previously, the base was home to HH-1N Huey helicopters that provided search and rescue services focusing on emergencies and medical evacuation involving civilians.

    Meridian, MS

Meridian is the seventh most populous city in the entire state of Mississippi, with nearly 40,000 residents. It is the county seat of Lauderdale and the principal city of the Meridian, Mississippi, Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The city was established in 1860 at the junction of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and Southern Railway of Mississippi. Meridian built its economy based on the railways and goods transported on them. Now, the area is served by two military facilities, NAS Meridian and Key Field, which employ over 4,000 people.

Even though it’s a fairly large city, housing is still quite affordable and plentiful, with the area always offering something to do. And the benefit of the city’s size is that there’s always something to do. Meridian is home to the MAX (Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience) and Highland Park (home of the Dentzel Carousel and Whynot Motorsports Park). And, if there’s not enough to do in the area, the city is less than two hours to Jackson, the home of the blues and civil rights.
